A charming antique strawberry emery made from deep burgundy velvet and decorated with small cream embroidered seeds. The fruit is divided into softly rounded sections, giving it a plump, naturalistic form.
The strawberry is finished with an elaborate arrangement of faded green silk ribbon leaves and a silk-wrapped hanging loop. The body is hard and densely filled, with no spring when pressed, consistent with an emery used for cleaning and sharpening sewing needles.
A beautifully timeworn piece of antique haberdashery and an appealing addition to a collection of strawberry emeries, sewing tools or early needlework accessories.
Size/Dimensions
H: 4 cm x W: 3.5 cm
The hanging loop and ribbons extend beyond these measurements.
Condition
Good antique condition with considerable age-related wear. The burgundy velvet has rubbing, fading and areas of flattened pile, with some darker discolouration. The embroidered seeds show wear and occasional losses. The green silk ribbon leaves are heavily faded, frayed and partially unravelled, while the silk covering on the hanging loop is worn and discoloured. The emery remains hard and solid, with no softness or spring to the filling.
Era
Late Victorian to Edwardian, circa 1890–1910
