An unusual antique ceramic weighing plate made for W. & T. Avery of Birmingham, originally forming part of a shopkeeper’s or grocer’s weighing scale.

The upper surface is decorated with a striking blue-grey faux marble pattern over a white ground, designed to imitate the appearance of veined marble. The reverse carries the W. & T. Avery Birmingham ribbon trademark, which is particularly useful in identifying the plate as an original Avery scale component.

Avery produced weighing equipment for shops and commercial premises, and ceramic plates such as this were used as the weighing surface on counter scales. Comparable Avery ceramic platforms are generally associated with the late Victorian and Edwardian period.

The marble-effect decoration makes this a particularly attractive example for display, whether as a piece of antique shop fitting, kitchenalia or as part of a restoration of period Avery scales.

Condition

Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and original use. There are light surface marks and small firing imperfections to the glaze. There is a small chip to the outer rim, shown in the photographs, together with some dark transfer/colour around sections of the edge. The W. & T. Avery Birmingham trademark to the reverse is present but the transfer is somewhat smudged rather than sharply defined. No major cracks are apparent.
