An unusual late Victorian advertising mirror for W. Schrimshaw, a furniture manufacturer based in Boston, Lincolnshire, dating to the late 19th century.
The mirror features distinctive red lettering reading 'W. Schrimshaw, Furniture Manufr.' across the top of the glass, with 'Boston, Lincs.' along the bottom. It is housed in a lovely dark wooden frame with mitred corners and retains an attractive aged appearance, with spotting and foxing to the original mirrored glass.
Historical trade directories record William Scrimshaw as a cabinet maker in Boston in 1892, while another directory lists him as a tailor and furniture dealer in Dolphin Lane. The business is also mentioned in local histories of Boston, including references to Scrimshaw's furniture stores in Dolphin Lane. The variation in spelling between the mirror's lettering and historical records is worth noting, although the location and trade strongly suggest a connection to the same business.
The reverse retains an old wooden backing board, held in place with nails, with a hanging cord attached for display.
A charming and unusual surviving piece of Victorian commercial advertising, with a lovely connection to the history of Boston, Lincolnshire. Particularly appealing to collectors of antique advertising, local history and traditional shop furnishings.
