A substantial antique white glazed ceramic weighing-scale plate made for W. & T. Avery Ltd., one of Britain’s best-known manufacturers of weighing equipment.

The centre bears a finely printed black Royal Arms with the wording “By Appointment to the late King Edward VII – W. & T. Avery Ltd.”. This wording dates the plate to after the death of Edward VII in 1910 and is characteristic of Avery weighing equipment from the early 20th century. Similar Avery porcelain platforms carrying this wording are recorded on George V-period weighing scales.

Originally forming the weighing platform from a commercial shop or grocer’s scale, it now works particularly well as a decorative piece of antique kitchenalia or advertising ware. The monochrome Royal crest gives it a restrained look compared with some of the more heavily decorated Avery plates.

Condition

Good antique condition with age-related crazing throughout the glaze, light surface marks and scratches, and small areas of staining and discolouration, particularly around the rim. There are some small glaze nibbles and firing imperfections consistent with age and commercial use. The central Avery transfer and Royal Arms remain exceptionally clear and well defined. No major cracks are apparent from the photographs.
