Art Deco Zsolnay Eosin Ceramic Basket Dish c.1930

A striking vintage ceramic basket dish attributed to Zsolnay, Hungary, dating from around the 1930s.

The dish is finished in Zsolnay’s distinctive Eosin-style lustre glaze, producing richly iridescent shades of green, turquoise, gold and violet that alter beautifully as the light changes. Its sculptural handle is formed from two stylised entwined lizards. Emerging from opposite sides of the bowl, the creatures curve upwards and appear to bite one another’s necks before merging into the arched handle. The unusual organic design gives the piece a wonderfully theatrical Art Deco appearance.

A highly decorative piece of Hungarian art pottery, ideal for display as a centrepiece, decorative bowl or collector’s item.

The underside is unmarked; however, the form, glaze and dimensions correspond closely with documented Zsolnay examples of this design.
