A rare early 19th-century pear-shaped pin cushion, acquired from an auction where it was catalogued as dating from the 1830s.

The pear is handmade from golden ochre velvet, with softly faded russet-red colouring to one side that gives it the appearance of ripening fruit. It retains its original wooden stalk and a group of delicate embossed paper leaves supported on fine wire.

The velvet body remains pleasingly firm and well shaped, with visible hand stitching and gathered construction to the base. Its naturalistic form, mellow colour and surviving paper foliage make this a particularly decorative example of early sewing-room haberdashery.

A beautiful collector’s piece for a display of antique pin cushions, sewing notions, textile fruit or early 19th-century folk art.

Condition

The velvet pear remains firm, full and well shaped, with no holes and very little apparent wear to the fabric. There is gentle fading and colour variation consistent with age, together with one small section where the velvet feels slightly rougher to the touch.

The fragile paper leaves show creasing, small edge losses and age-related wear. Some of the original fine wire and thread are visible around the stalk. Overall, the textile body is in notably good condition for a piece dating from the 1830s. Please study the photographs carefully and handle the paper leaves with care.
