A beautifully decorated early 19th-century mug featuring a finely detailed black bat-printed landscape.

The pastoral scene depicts a fisherman standing beside flowing water, with trees, cottages and distant hills beyond. Delicate gilding around the rim and along the handle provides an elegant finishing detail.

Bat printing was a specialist decorative technique popular during the Regency period. The design was transferred to the ceramic surface using a flexible gelatine pad or “bat”, producing the soft, finely shaded appearance seen here.

The mug has a cylindrical body and an elegant loop handle. It is unmarked to the underside and retains an old collector’s label.

An attractive display piece for a collection of Regency ceramics, monochrome bat printing or early British pottery.

Condition

In displayable antique condition. The handle has been broken across its upper curve and subsequently repaired; the repair remains secure. There is rubbing and loss to the gilding around the rim and handle, together with minor surface marks and age-related speckling. The body and interior appear free from cracks and chips. Please study the photographs carefully.
