Victorian Peg Doll Folk Art Wooden Doll c1900

A characterful Victorian peg doll dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, circa 1890–1910. Peg dolls were traditionally simple wooden dolls with carved or turned bodies and minimal painted features, made as children’s toys and for fairground or cottage industry sale. This example has a carved and painted wooden head with softly defined facial features, original painted nose and lips, and a rich, worn surface patina consistent with age. The body has carved wooden arms and legs with painted lower limbs and boots. The brown and cream gingham cotton dress with lace trim, apron, and underlayers appear to be period style clothing and may be later additions rather than original to the doll, though they are sympathetic in look and age. The straw hat is a later addition for display and is not original. A strong decorative and collectible example of an early Victorian/Edwardian peg doll, suitable for folk art collections, interiors, or period prop use.
