Victorian White Ironstone Grocers Slab E. Jackson & Co Leeds

Victorian white ironstone grocer’s slab by E. Jackson & Co of Leeds, bearing the circular printed backstamp for their Kirk Gate premises. These thick, heavy slabs were used by grocers, cheesemongers and provision merchants for cutting, weighing and displaying produce before the widespread use of modern counters. The plain white glaze and robust, utilitarian form are characteristic of late 19th century commercial ironstone.
