A wonderful vintage Barbour’s Linen Domestic Thread sewing box, retaining a selection of original Barbour’s linen threads and haberdashery pieces. The rectangular card box is printed to the lid: “The Ladies’ Box of Barbour’s Linen Domestic Thread with Needles & Thimble”

Inside, the box has a rich orange interior with fitted compartments and an attractive colour advertising illustration to the underside of the lid showing the range of Barbour’s linen sewing and embroidery products.

The surviving contents include a selection of Barbour’s branded linen threads in several different forms, al red printed end label. The contents appear to have been assembled and used over time, rather than necessarily representing every item originally supplied with the box. The needles and thimble mentioned on the lid are no longer present.

Barbour & Sons were important manufacturers of linen thread, with production associated with Lisburn, Northern Ireland, which is printed on several of the surviving labels.

A very decorative and increasingly difficult-to-find piece of vintage sewing history, particularly appealing displayed open with the original advertising artwork and branded contents.

Condition

Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. The outer box has rubbing, knocks and wear around the edges and corners, together with some lifting and losses to the paper covering. The interior has general marks and age-related wear, particularly around the dividers. The colour advertising print inside the lid remains particularly attractive.

The thread packaging has expected age-related wear, creasing, discolouration and small losses. The threads themselves vary in the amount remaining. Please note that this is not a complete original set; the contents are exactly as photographed.
