Vintage Chinese Wooden Figural International Chess Set Original Box

A wonderfully decorative vintage chess set made in the People’s Republic of China, comprising 32 distinctive black-and-white wooden playing pieces.

The sculptural pieces are individually turned and shaped to represent the traditional chess ranks, with particularly characterful knights, bishops, queens and kings. Their glossy monochrome finish looks striking against the black-and-white folding chessboard.

The set retains its original pink patterned presentation box, labelled “International Chess Set” and marked “Made in the People’s Republic of China.” A further label identifies it as Article No. 321-202.

Believed to date from around the 1960s or 1970s, this is an appealing mid-century Chinese export set that works equally well for play or display.

The set contains all 32 wooden chess pieces, together with the folding board and original outer box.
