A striking vintage Monk & Glass Egg Substitute Powder tin, manufactured by Monkhouse & Glasscock Ltd. of Snowsfields, London.
The cylindrical tin has a wonderfully bold mustard-yellow ground with black typography reading “Monk & Glass Egg Substitute Powder – Not Prepared From Eggs”. The reverse carries original printed instructions for using the powder in cakes and tea cakes, pancakes and Yorkshire pudding, together with the manufacturer’s details.
The original removable lid is also printed with the Monk & Glass branding. A characterful survivor from the first half of the 20th century, and a particularly appealing piece of British kitchen and food advertising ephemera.
Size/Dimensions
H: 8.2 cm × D: 5.3 cm
Condition
Good vintage condition with extensive age-related surface wear, scratches, marks and areas of oxidation, particularly to the lid, rim and base. There is loss to the yellow finish on the lid and general rubbing throughout, but the principal lettering and instructional text remain very clear and the wear gives the tin a strong period appearance.
Era
Circa 1930s–1940s
