An original pearlware commemorative mug produced to mark the coronation of King William IV on 8 September 1831.

Printed in a rich purple tone, the front features a portrait of William IV surrounded by roses, thistles, shamrocks and other floral emblems. The reverse is decorated with a crown beneath the word “Reform”, while further floral decoration appears inside the mug and across its distinctive angular handle.

The portrait is signed “Kennedy” within the design. A decorative printed C & R mark appears on the underside (manufacturer is unknown).

A scarce piece of early 19th-century British royal commemorative pottery, now approaching 200 years old.

Condition

In distressed antique condition. There are several substantial cracks running through the body and extending into the interior, including cracks descending from the rim. There is also a noticeable chip to the rim, small areas of surface wear and staining, and some loss to the transfer decoration around the handle. The handle remains attached.

The damage is clearly shown in the photographs. We would recommend this as a display or collection piece rather than for practical use.
